The goal was to create a simple, scalable portfolio site for Alexis Ramirez Arte, a Oaxacan artist known for his Mesoamerican-inspired paintings and designs. The site showcases samples of his work, provides a bio, includes a contact form, and links to his Instagram, where he engages most actively with his audience.
This was my first time building a site in Spanish, which required adapting industry terminology and user-facing content for a Spanish-speaking audience. Setting the lang
attribute to es-MX
and ensuring the site adhered to best practices for accessibility and localization were key priorities. I used ChatGPT to help draft initial communication and refine technical terminology, making this a unique learning experience.
To keep expenses low and maintain scalability, I chose 11ty and Netlify over site builders like Webflow. This lightweight static site approach helps ensure fast load times and excellent scores across performance, accessibility, best practices, and SEO on Lighthouse. Additionally, I prioritized an email-based workflow for edits, avoiding the complexity of a content management system and ensuring ease of use for the artist.
The artist was thrilled with the final product, which not only highlights his work but also lays the groundwork for expanding his online presence and engaging a broader audience.
I met Alexis a few years ago while visiting family in Oaxaca with my future wife. While exploring the city center, we came across a vibrant group of artist stands. Drawn to his unique style, I purchased a few of his pieces and started following him on Instagram.
